| Memories of the 90s: Freedom from sad realities of life; good memories that was high school life, pinoy alternative rock, opm music | Nov 16, 2006 |
Part of my memories of the 90s was the height of my high school years that molded my mind mostly en route to my pre-adulthood. Music was lively, OPM Rock was at its height, tabloids sprung in every sidewalks of the Philippines, controversies, and awareness on everything that made the youth more expressive like what they are doing nowadays.
I miss my classmates and schoolmates way back in 1995-1997 which are the years I spent at ILIGAN CITY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL (ICNHS). It was the height of Pinoy Alternative Rock that produced the Eraserheads, Parokya ni Edgar, Yano, Rivermaya, The Dawn, True Faith, The Youth, Grin Department, The Teeth, Wolfgang, Introvoys, Rockstar..etc.
OPM came out as outstanding as the alternative music scene. It was also the time when the jukebox sensations came out with the likes of the APRIL BOYS (core group of April Boy Regino, who went solo), Rockstar, Ariel Rivera, Rodel Naval..etc.
Male dance groups in the entertainment industry went out and took a share of the spotlight: STREETBOYS, UMD, MALE ATTRAXION, THE MANEUVERS etc.. They moved with the dance hits that made us move our feet to the beat.
Michael Jordan helped the Bulls win back to back titles. It was the time when most people chose to be absent from school just to watch the NBA Playoffs where the BULLS were the consistent appearing team in the finals.
This era was also the height of the Philippine tittilating movies or rated-R movies which also resulted to a number of tabloids that sprouted in the sidewalks of the Philippines.
More to that, I tribute this era focusing to the Philippine context. Although music is universal with the present of MTV and Channel V, the life that was the 90s was more Pinoy pop culture centered to me. Influences from the west is normal and I greatly appreciate of what the Pinoys can do in relation to the western pop culture.
Now, more than ten years since I graduated high school, I already miss all of the things that was the 90s. Most of my classmates are no longer living here in our city. Some of them have already married foreigners due to the proliferation of Yahoo messenger relationships that eventually led to marriage while some have already worked to major Philippine cities to try their luck for greener pastures.
Somehow, I wish this memory will never be forgotten and that they may be able to see this site with the delight of hearing from them again. I just miss the life that was free, no hassles, just waking up everyday and go to school to do things that was outright fun--unlike now, where the sad realities of life have already eaten us out alive making us forget that life shouldn't be about MONEY, that it should be about living quality life through friends, relationships, and socialization.
This site is a tribute to all that was the 90s.

Angelo Reyes' Suicide: Patriotism at its real sense?
The suicide of AFP Chief of Staff Angelo Reyes puts more questions as to what's the real score of the lost P 240 million pesos funds. I could say his suicide has more questions than the lost funds. It's not because of the saying that if he's... morePrevious blog entries: | ||
